There are THREE (3) levels of Coxswain:


Exemption 38 (not Coxswain Grade 3, which doesnt yet exist)
(ie the old Coxswain Restricted
)

Currently called “Exemption 38” until the Grade 3 is formally released by AMSA. (Scroll down for more info).

Coxswain Grade 1 – This course is done via correspondence and on your work site, utilising your equipment and on your vessel. (Scroll down for more info)

Exemption 38 (not Coxswain Grade 3, which doesnt yet exist)

(like the old Coxswain Restricted / called Exemption 38 at the moment)

You do three (3) units that are actually part of the Coxswain 2 and Coxswain 1 course.

So when you do the Exemption 38 (not Coxswain Grade 3, which doesnt yet exist), you are actually completing part of the higher levels.

MARN002 – Apply seamanship skills aboard a vessel up to 12 metres

MARK001 – Handle a vessel up to 12 metres

MARI001 – Comply with regulations to ensure safe operation of a vessel up to 12 metres

You study Theory by Correspondence, we send you a boxed Kit.

Then finish it with a full day that is a Theory exam and also doing the Practical (which is both training and assessment). You get very detailed notes of all steps before the practical.

We walk you through it, and tell you what to learn and what to know etc.

TIME: Takes about a week self study, plus 1 day Exams and Practical.

COST: $599 (+GST)

GOVT: Currently no further Govt / DoT Oral exam and certificate costs whilst it is still just called an Exemption (Cox Grade 3 certification when it arrives at DoT will likely involve costs)

OTHER: You will need internet access, your own copy (digital or hard copy) of Australian Boaters Manual, plus a Commercial vessel for the final practical.

COXSWAIN GRADE 2

Once you have completed the above 3 units, you can do the below 5 units to get the Coxswain Grade 2.

People who haven’t done the above 3, will need to do them, plus these below 5 for the Coxswain Grade 2, i.e. 8 units in total for Coxswain 2.

MARC005 – Operate inboard and outboard motors

MARF001 – Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment

MARF002 – Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel

MARF004 – Meet work health and safety requirements

MARJ001 – Follow environmental work practices

TIME: Takes most people about 3 weeks at home, plus 1 days Exams and Practical.

COST: $875 (+GST) to upgrade from the Grade 3.

GOVT: Oral assessment, Sea Time (LINK) plus certificate costs – see DoT website for current costs and AMSA SITE LINK for Guidance notes.

OTHER: You will need internet access, your own copy (digital or hard copy) of Australian Boaters Manual, plus a Commercial vessel for the practical.

COXSWAIN GRADE 1

You can do all the above 8 units and get the Coxswain Grade 2, you can then progress to the Coxswain Grade 1 units at a later stage by doing these next 4 units;

MARB002 – Perform basic servicing and maintenance of main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems

MARC006 – Operate main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems

MARH001 – Plan and navigate a passage for a vessel up to 12 metres

MARF005 – Survive at sea using survival craft

TIME: Takes about 4 weeks (all 12 units), plus 1-2 days Exams and Practical.

COST: $800+GST to upgrade from the Coxswain Grade 2.

There is also now an in water component, students of the Grade 1 and Grade 2 have to swim 50m with lifejackets, demonstrate that they can don a jacket in the water etc. Exemption 38 students dont need to swim.

Units can be done at different AMSA accredited trainers anywhere in the country. Perth Boat School is the only one accredited to deliver this in ALL states and the NT.
