Courses are being conducted every day somewhere in WA.It is mostly correspondence with face to face practical and assessment at the end Short answer - you can do it in 2 days (1 at home, 1 with us on a boat).Long answer - It's a 4 day course if done in a classroom (eg at TAFE), however a lot of time is wasted in a classroom. It's actually about 12 hours of theory and 6 hours of practical for a single student when trained intensively one-on-one with our trainer / assessor. 3. What is the course structure? The course is made up of 2 parts; Part 1 - students do this in their own time (at home or at work - wherever). This usually takes about 12 hours in total desk time, however the odd student has said they have completed it all in an 8 hour day at work with no interruptions. Most take 3 or 4 days to complete it, part time - spending 2 or 3 hours each day / night. Once Part 1 is complete, Part 2 (theory and practical) is done with the Trainer present on a commercial boat. This takes most of 1 day depending on the skills of the student and the amount of training they need to demonstrate competence. 4. What is the face to face Practical training part? This is Part 2 of the course done at the workplace and on a boat.
Trainer and Students then proceed onto the vessel to do the practical component. The trainer assesses the students continually as the day progresses. We provide splash resistant clipboard containers for all students for the paperwork items used during the day. We keep going until students reach the requisite standard of competence. 5. How long before I get my Coxswains Restricted? Perth Boat School processes the paperwork within 24 hours of the student completing Part 2, we then forward to DoT (used to be DPI) a PDF copy of the students qualifications. We also email the PDF to the student / employer as well as mail a laminated hard copy of the certificate to the student. The student then takes all the paperwork to DoT (Essex St, Fremantle) who usually issue the Coxswains Restricted qualification to the student within 24 hours. Anywhere in WA. Students receive the Course Materials Kit in the mail (or they can collect it) and are able to study it, fill in the supplied Worksheets, answer written questions and do some of the ropework knots and splices (ropes provided) in their own time in the days prior to the Trainer/Assessor arriving. In the Kit we also supply a DPI medical form, eyesight form and Application form which are needed to have been completed before the DPI will issue the qualification. 7. When can I do the Practical? As it takes most students just a few evenings to complete Part 1, we schedule Part 2 about a week after the student receives the Kit. Some students have received the Kit on a Monday, done the Practical with us on a Thursday and received their Coxswains Restricted from DPI by the Friday (so long as they have all their medicals, photos etc done). 8. I want to do it, what is the process? After enrolling (electronic enrolment form is attached) and paying (payment options Visa, Direct Debit etc are on the form) we send you Part 1 of the course in the form of a correspondence course 'Kit'. Same cost for anyone anywhere in the state. $490 for the Course 10. What other course costs / resources are needed? If you don't have one, you need to buy a Small Ships Manual which costs $40 (we can supply these). In the metro area there are no further costs if you have a boat. 11. What if I don’t have a commercial boat? Commercial boat hire generally costs $600 per day, however Perth Boat School will hire a vessel on your behalf (from one of a number of Hire companies) and we will subsidise this so that no student pays more than $250 for the vessel use. 12. What are the course pre-requisites? You need to be 18, pass eyesight and medical and have done your Recreational Skippers Ticket (if you haven't done your RST, you can do it with us or any other RST provider) before the Cox Res course. 13. What does it cost elsewhere in WA, eg Karratha, Kununurra, Albany, Esperance or a minesite? Course cost is the same everywhere in WA. The only extra is that the student / company needs to arrange and pay for the cost of transporting, feeding and accommodating of the (Perth based) trainer between Perth and the student. Some companies use their own flights, others arrange land transport, there are differences in each workplace scenario (talk to us if you have an unusual scenario / proposal). Occasionally a number of companies / students get together and do all their practicals together thus sharing the transport / flight costs of the trainer for the day/s (max 6 students per day). 14. Is it a recognized certification? Perth Boat School is a Registered Training Organisation (like TAFE) and so all our AQTF courses are nationally recognised from National Training Packages. 15. Who needs a Coxswains Restricted? EVERYONE who skippers any vessel, no matter how small, while at work needs a commercial qualification. The Coxswains Restricted is the "bottom of the ladder" of commercial qualifications in WA. 16. Isn't the Skippers Ticket enough? No, the Recreational Skippers Ticket is for use on a recreational vessel only and for recreational purposes only. Even power boat handling courses are recreational only and merely assist students with their boat handling skills. Commercial qualifications are completely different and allow work on a vessel whilst at work. 17. How is it different to the full Coxswains? The Coxswains (Restricted) course is a part of the full Coxswains course, it is 3 of the 16 units that make up the full (unrestricted) Coxswain, so it is a start at the bottom of the ladder of commercial qualifications. You do not need sea time to get a Coxswain Restricted, whereas there is a sea time component as well as other items required to get a Coxswain unrestricted. 18. What does it allow me to drive? Coxswains Restricted allows command of a Class 2,3 or Survey Exempt vessel of less than 8 meters in length, less than 5 nautical miles from the ‘mainland shore’ without passengers. ("without passengers" does not mean without "crew" - so you can carry people on board if they are all "crew".) The Department of Transport issues the Coxswains Restricted to people who satisfy the following requirements;
20. What do I need to do your course?
There is substantial overlap in the two and completion of the RST allows us to shorten the Coxswains Restricted course for students. If students do not have the RST, we can do both the RST and Coxswains Restricted together. 21. When do you hold Recreational Skippers Ticket courses? Recreational Skippers Tickets assessments are done daily in Perth, regional courses are held on demand. Most people can complete the Theory and Practical assessments in less than 90 minutes (if they have studied the Workbook well). Bookings are automated and done via our booking page online www.perthboatschool.com.au) |
